Every semester, the Graduate School of Architecture at the Academy of Art University holds a Visionary Charrette with a new guest instructor and new site. The event is named to convey the intense effort and short time period of the visionary project students complete. The Spring 2007 Visionary Charrette, which took place March 26-29 at the Academy of Art University, challenged students to work both individually and as teams to explore the possibilities of a new landmark development at the site of the San Francisco Transbay Terminal. The students completed a series of drawings which were deposited at the l’École des Beaux Arts in Paris. At the end of the intense four-day event, five teams presented five schemes to the public. The projects were reviewed by professinal planners and architects from the city, sparking lively debate about what happens when visionary architecture precedes planning guidelines. Read more

CANNES, France (Hollywood Reporter) - Ulrich Seidl’s “Import Export” is a tawdry little film ostensibly about the cultural clashes resulting from the proximity of former Soviet states like the Ukraine to Western nations like Austria. There is a film to be made on the topic, but this isn’t it.
With an aimless script inadequately filmed, the picture is unlikely to make it much farther than its inexplicable inclusion in the Cannes Film Festival’s competition.
As the title suggests, there are twin stories in the film, with a Ukrainian nurse seeking unskilled employment in Austria while a pair of witless Austrian yobs end up in the Ukraine trying to sell an outdated gumball machine.
