If wood is taken care of, and sometimes even if it isn?t, it can last a really, really long time. So shouldn?t we be able to make good use of all the wood that?s already out there? A lot of designers think so and are doing just that. Reclaimed wood usually comes from old furniture, houses, or other built things that are ready for some friendly reincarnation, from flawed wood, or from scraps from a factory that makes other stuff. Some reclaimed wood even comes from logs that sunk to the bottom of rivers as they were being floated downstream to the sawmill, or from the bottom of man-made reservoirs (check out the Sawfish). Either way, furniture made from reclaimed wood is a great example of resource efficiency, but usually comes in shorter supply. The Rainforest Alliance has a Rediscovered Wood Certification label to look for.

Kelly LaPlante and James Saavedra knew they had a lot in common when they started an Earth-friendly furniture line last year.

They’ve both worked as interior designers, had stints on cable television shows and remodeled their share of mansions.

But what they didn’t know until it was time to visit family this past Christmas is that they both hail from Fremont. They even graduated from rival high schools the same year. LaPlante, 31, graduated from American; Saavedra, also 31, went to Mission San Jose.

In deference to their shared roots, they have named their furniture line “Fremont.” The first pieces ? an organic couch, chairs and a bedframe ? are now being showcased at Project Greenhouse, a display at theSundance Film Festival. Read more

An early-morning fire that devoured nearly a half a block of historic downtown Maquoketa buildings reportedly started in a furniture store in the 100 block of south Main Street, firefighters say.

Hot spots continued to burn early this afternoon, as scores of firefighters worked in the sub-zero conditions.

TH reporter Mary Nevans-Pederson says two firefighters were transported to the hospital - one due to the frigid conditions, the other injured when he was hit by falling debris.

Three businesses have been destroyed in the fire, and at least two others are badly damaged, Maquoketa fire officials said at an afternoon news conference. Four families, residents of apartments in the buildings, were displaced. There were no other reports of injury. Read more
