Practical style for the smaller home
Follow style advisor Elif K?ramer’s apartment in Dikilita?, one notices the host is fond of fixing up and spending time in her home. After spending her childhood years in Ortak?y, she moved to Ni?anta??. However, traffic jams and parking problems caused her move to Dikilita?, which is a central location and also not very far from her favorite neighborhood, Ni?anta??. ?I can only imagine living outside the city center when I have a big family,? she says. A single working woman, K?ramer attaches importance to relations with neighbors. ?It sounds closer and more sincere to request something from a neighbor or house porter,? she says. Because she was raised in a large family she likes to organize iftars (special dinners for holy Ramadan) or New Year’s Eve parties for her friends and family. Remembering how the first days in her new abode began, she said that the house had a bedroom and dressing room in addition to a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. ?I remember screaming ?At last!’ the first moment I saw the place. Though I recognized it was extremely useless and filthy, I decided to take it because it got sunlight from three sides and had a garden full of greenery,? she says. Immediately after moving in she and a few amateur workers started making renovations. First she replaced the floor with laminate parquet. Doors were removed or changed. The wall behind the kitchen counter was covered with small mat ceramics. Visible water pipes were moved. Unnecessary and useless areas were demolished and new ones created. In order to use one of the rooms as a dressing room, water pipes were hung between the walls and columns to create a single hanging rod. A few makeshift decorative solutions were found for the bathroom. All that work was completed in less than two months. ?If I don’t decorate my home I can’t feel as if I’m the owner of it’ says K?ramer. She prefers light colors for the floors and window panes in order to take full advantage of the sunlight. A small and light-colored home is comforting to K?ramer because she says she likes waking up early and spending time at home. She says she uses the daylight to assist with her hobbies of puzzle making, painting, bag decorating and wood painting. In the decoration of the K?ramer’s home, she let her spiritual mood and location of the house be her guide.
The hostess says that budget is always the most important point in home decoration. Fixing old furniture is the first thing she does and changing color is always the easiest solution. She first thought of combining black and white with the light tones she used for the floor but abandoned the idea for fear it would look too masculine. Instead she decided to furnish her home with a comfortable purple suede corner sofa and a large pouf stool. Although K?ramer likes domi-classic style, she preferred to create a modern atmosphere with the small size. While making use of every side, she didn’t neglect to leave some living space. K?ramer says she didn’t make detailed plans for decoration before moving; rather she buys things on her travels or while window shopping. She doesn’t keep anything at home she doesn’t use. However she thinks the depth of her hidden decadence appeared when she added white to various sized black roses. ?I laughed a lot while buying them from Euro Flora. What’s more, it looks quite interesting near a pop art canvas,? she says. Lastly, she chose a color for the ceiling similar to the walls to make the ceiling appear higher. She wanted to capture a simpler look by using the same colors. Under Picture:K?ramer bought the different sized lanterns from Ikea.
She painted the table, chairs and coffee tables white. With the wall paint reflecting the natural sunlight in my house, the fuchsia, orange and grey objects over her tables look rather flashy.
The wicker chair she bought from Beymen is much more comfortable than it looks. She says she can’t give up antique pieces in her house and created the smartest spaces for them.
The suitcase she is using as TV table is a family memento that is at least 150 years old.
The chiffonier she is using in my dressing room is from a Greek house bought in her grandfather’s childhood.
The renovated mirror she likes to use in her bedroom is decorated with golden and silver foil; she bought it from a friend at Horhor.
The doors of the cupboard she uses as a bookcase in her bedroom is made from the doors of an old Greek home.
She painted the mirror in the lounge with black oil paint that she bought from a second-hand dealer.
Placing all small kitchen utensils in this portable rack sold as shoe shelf in Ikea is an ideal style for staying tidy.
