Sometimes, when Randee Spelkoman Ryan looks around her condominium at the Ayer, nine floors above Philadelphia’s Washington Square, she thinks, “I’m living in the clouds.”

In the living room alone, views from six large windows - 7 feet by 4 feet - sweep across not just the historic park, but also the Delaware River, the Ben Franklin Bridge, Independence Mall, and the city’s sparkling skyline.

The living space is all on one floor, with 11-foot ceilings and rooms that glide from one to the next, often without doors or walls to block light or sight.

Five shades of gray cover the walls, creating an effect that arcs from warm to cool and back again. The living room furniture is brown, the dining tabletop is white, the floors a radiant walnut.

During their yearlong hunt for the perfect co-op, David Penick and Mary Delaney Penick looked at a unit in a bland 1960s apartment building in Greenwich Village.

The only thing they liked about the place was what they could see from its north-facing windows: a handsome brick-and-limestone building with wrought-iron balconies and tall windows, through which they spotted fireplaces and beamed ceilings.

A few days later, a broker showed them two apartments in the elegant structure, which has three entrances, at Nos. 29-35-45 East Ninth Street (and a uniformed doorman at each).

One was a 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom, with north-, south- and east-facing windows. The three exposures, Mr. Penick said, “make it feel like a house.”

Why is it that when black and tan are used in conjunction, the look is smashing? There is something very sophisticated, classy, rich about that combination.

Take a sofa that is all light tan in color, add pillows that are black mixed with tan — it doesn’t matter what the pattern is, be it plaid, paisley, geometric, floral — and the combination will lift that sofa up in design caliber.

Let’s do a bedroom in black and tan. A bedspread that is black with tan is very attractive to both male and female tastes. Granted, the motif has a masculine quality to it, but it still is very pleasing to the female eye as well. Couple that bedspread with a white washed, aspen or any light colored wood for the bedroom set, and the bedroom will be picture perfect.

The floor of this room can be either light-colored wood with some rugs in strategic places for stepping on, on cool mornings, or it can be light tan carpet. Here, the plusher the carpet, the better. There is even a carpet available that is all cotton. All cotton carpeting is a bit more pampering to the feet than the normal nylon or wool carpet. Granted, the 100 percent cotton carpet will soil easier than the nylon or wool, but by keeping this carpet in the bare-feet-only bedroom it likely will be easier to maintain than if it were used in other, more traffic oriented areas of the house.

“Fresh hardwood is not available any longer and so I make it a point to recycle old wood,” the designer pointed out.

His factory in Noida is stacked with handcrafted antique furniture made of recycled wood and discards.

The prices of Vadhera’s furniture range from Rs.5,000 to Rs.50,000. He sources his old wooden furniture from villages and royal estates in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
