It took almost a year to research, design and build, and now the Eastern Shore’s only authentic replica of an 18th century dairy house is finally completed and outfitted.
Just off the kitchen end of the 1741 brick house of Isaac Henry at Pemberton Hall is the sawn-log replica of a 12 by 12 by 18 foot period milk house. Crafted from 200-year-old white oak logs, the structure sits on the exact site of the original dairy house at Pemberton.
Much of the structure was handcrafted in Kramer, Pa., and trucked to Salisbury in June. It is an exact copy of the period milk house at Bassett Hall in Colonial Williamsburg. It is distinguished by the application, by hand, of plaster under the eaves that creates a cove. This unique concave detail promotes airflow and can reduce the interior temperature, particularly during the summer, by as much as 15 degrees.

Sydney has a long history of apartment living as a result of a heady concoction of topography, ever-increasing land values and its global city status. But in spite of its latest apartment boom, the city continues to stumble in creating a truly hybrid form of affordable urban-suburban housing, one that is well-designed and highly compact. Perhaps the reason is an antipathy, a cultural resistance to communal living.
But do we have a choice? In Los Angeles, the land of the suburban dream, change is under way.
As the journal Dwell stated in its October issue, due to land and construction costs, the dream of single-family home ownership is now beyond the reach of many, particularly first home buyers. When you hear the phrase “going green” the colonial town of Williamsburg, Va. doesn’t exactly come to mind. Yet the self-sufficiency of that historic town was the inspiration for King Street Shoppe, which recently opened in East Berlin.
“This is not your grandma’s craft shop,” owner Rebecca Meixner said as she buzzed about the shop that is filled with locally made products.
The idea for the shop came from Meixner’s search for an alternative to shopping at a retail chain store and her fondness of history.
Three years ago, Meixner and her family were looking for an older home in their native Pittsburgh, but she said the oldest building she could find was built in the 1950s.
After researching different areas and finding a building that dates back to at least the 1820s, they quickly bought their present home in East Berlin. Read more

Susan Williams-Ellis, a trend-setting British ceramics designer who created a flowery yet daring line of high-end tableware that broke tradition, has died. She was 89.
Williams-Ellis died of bronchial pneumonia Nov. 27 at her home in Portmeirion, a fanciful village that her architect father built over half a century in Wales, said Josephine Dillon, a spokeswoman for Portmeirion Potteries, the company Williams-Ellis founded in 1962.
Williams-Ellis defied conventional thinking, creating pieces that were made to mix and match, a once-novel concept that continues to sustain her pottery business more than three decades after it was founded.
Noted British ceramics designer David Queensberry told The Times on Friday: “She was just completely original. She did her own thing and created all these, in a sense, curious and extraordinary designs. . . . She did things people had never done.” Read more
